Focused on color and feeling

At the end of the school year, Year 4 were once again able to be part of a special project as part of the "Kulturstrolche" project. The end of their time at school was marked by a colorful activity: a Holi photo shoot.

A Holi photo shoot is based on the Indian Holi festival, where brightly colored powder is thrown into the air. The aim is to create expressive images using color, movement and emotion. The campaign therefore focused on the question: how can a good photo be taken that conveys emotions and is creative at the same time? The three fourth-grade classes took part on different days.

The daily routine was the same for all three classes. In the first two lessons, the children dealt with the following topics:

  • Right to your own image: What may be photographed - and what not?
  • What do images trigger in us? What emotions are conveyed by images? Which motifs tell a story or convey a feeling?
  • Memories through pictures: What significance do photos have for our memory?
  • Taking photos: How do you take a good photo?

After the big break, the practical part followed: the Holi photo shoot. In addition to the technical implementation, the focus was also on creative expression.

Of course, there was also plenty of fun to be had. In between, there were small color battles in which the camera was also in use, either in the hands of the photographer or the children themselves. The children worked in small groups, planned their own motifs and took over the camera themselves, which was passed around in turn.

The grand finale was the big class photo in a sea of color. Each child was given a handful of colored powder. On command, they all jumped up at the same time and threw the powder into the air. A colorful, lively picture that is not only visually exciting, but also a reminder of a special day at school.

The project was accompanied by professional photographer Nelleke Reimann from Gildehaus. She has been working as a freelance photographer in the field of pregnancy, children and family photography for several years. She explained her work as a photographer to the children with a great deal of patience and pleasure, provided information about data protection in a child-friendly way and supported the children with their own photo ideas.

Many thanks go to the town of Gronau, which has provided exciting insights over several years as part of the "Kulturstrolche" project. Thanks also go to Nelleke Reimann, who made this special experience possible for the children with her enthusiasm, expertise and warmth.
