SUSTAINABILITY

Green thumbs in action

As part of the "Healthy eating" series of lessons, selected second-graders took on a responsible task: they looked after the school's raised bed and prepared it for a new planting season.

First, the bed was carefully prepared. The children removed weeds and old leaves and dug up all the existing plants. They then loosened the soil and improved it with fresh soil and fertilizer to create optimal growing conditions. They then replanted the plants with sufficient spacing and watered them generously.

Six kohlrabi plants and nine strawberry plants were planted in the raised bed for the new season. Fortunately, the strawberry plants survived the winter well, but Ms. Brillert added four more strawberry plants to the bed. Now it is up to the children to look after the young plants carefully and observe their growth.

The project not only showed the children the value of healthy eating, but also the importance of patience and responsible interaction with nature. They are now looking forward to the coming harvest season with great anticipation, which the children were amazed at: The first fruits and vegetables cannot be harvested until June, July or even August. This experience made them realize that fresh food is not immediately available at all times - unlike what the supermarket shows.
