The search for the best fourth-grade child reader in the Borken district reached an exciting climax in December 2024. First of all, the best child reader was determined in each class. The winners of this internal selection were Jonna (4a), Ella (4b) and Jessica (4c).
The three class winners then competed against each other. The jury, consisting of Ms. Dalhaus, Ms. Duesmann and Mr. Zellner, found it anything but easy to make a decision. All three girls impressed with their presentations. They presented their chosen books with great enthusiasm and also mastered the unfamiliar text with aplomb. All three students received a book as a thank you for their efforts. In the end, the decision was made in favor of Ella. With a few valuable tips from the jury, she prepared herself for the next challenge: the regional competition.
Today, Ella competed against children from schools in Gronau and Ahaus. The competition was just as demanding as the internal school selection. First, the participants presented their prepared texts before tackling the unknown text. The excerpt was from the book "Der Schwobbel - Ein Schleim zieht ein" by Mars-Leo Frei. In this humorous story, ten-year-old Akim is suddenly faced with an unusual challenge: a slimy creature, the Schwobbel, appears unexpectedly at his door and asks to move in with him. The Schwobbel, who looks like an oversized pudding, causes Akim's everyday life to become a real mess. Together they not only have to deal with everyday problems, but also break a mysterious curse. In the process, Akim learns to rise above himself and stand up to Norbert, the school bully.
After almost three hours of exciting and varied reading contributions from a total of twelve children, the three best readers were announced - including Ella. She is one of the few pupils from Buterland School to have made it through to the district competition - a success that was last achieved many years ago.
Especially after the cancellation of the event in the pandemic years (2020-2023), this competition is an encouraging sign that reading can be celebrated again with joy and commitment and that the importance of it is becoming clear.
The staff at Buterland School would like to congratulate Ella on her great performance in the regional competition and wish her the best of luck for the next round!
