In March 2025, the Buterland School became the first school in Gronau to become an emergency island. The Notinsel project is a Germany-wide initiative that offers children quick and uncomplicated help in emergency situations. Wherever the emergency island sign is displayed on doors and windows, children can find a safe haven.
Whether a child feels persecuted, teased, lost or afraid - they can always seek protection in an emergency island and find adults who will help. The staff know what to do in an emergency situation: listen, reassure and, if necessary, inform the parents or the police.
The aim of the emergency island is to make public spaces safer for children and to give them the feeling that they are not alone. At the same time, parents should be reassured that there are places where children can turn to in confidence if they feel unwell.
The emergency island stickers on doors and windows are clearly visible and signal: "You are safe here."
Important information for parents:
- You can find out about locations near you via the website www.notinsel.de.
- The initiative is supported by the Hänsel+Gretel Foundation together with cities, municipalities and local partners.
The emergency island is a strong sign of solidarity in a community where children are protected and taken seriously.
